Low Salt Cookbook

If you or someone you know would benefit from easy and delicious ways to incorporate low sodium foodsin their diet, the Euclid Hospital Educational Support Group is
now offering a low-salt cookbook at a great price.

Why Some People Should be Careful With
Their Salt Intake

Sodium is a mineral found in many foods.  It helps keep normal fluids balanced in the body.  Most people eat foods containing more sodium than they need.  Some foods may be high in sodium and not taste salty.  Eating too much sodium causes the body to keep or retain too much water, worsening the fluid build-up in heart failure.  Following a low-sodium diet helps control high blood pressure (hypertension), swelling and water build-up (edema), and/or decrease breathing difficulties for people who have kidney, heart or liver problems. In heart failure, the heart will not have to pump as hard if there is less fluid to move through the blood vessels.

Our Solution

When the CHF Educational Support Group started, it became quickly apparent that diet for these patients was a major issue.  Some patients already had ideas on how to change their recipes to make them low sodium.

Our Support Group members decided that a low sodium cookbook would be helpful.  Over time, staff, patients and support group members turned in their favorite recipes.  They also shared low sodium food products they found at local grocery stores.

Patricia Jarchow, a patient and support group member who loved to cook and try new recipes converted many recipes into ones that were low in sodium.

When the cookbook was ready for print, we faced a dilemma. We needed to do this as inexpensively as possible since our goal was to make this book affordable for patients who had financial issues as well.  We were lucky to find Duke Printing, who generously printed the cookbooks at cost.  Around this time, Patricia became very ill and passed away.

Her family generously encouraged donations to the CHF Center to help other patients.  Patricia’s granddaughter, Megan Lykins, an art major, volunteered to create the cover of the book in honor of her grandmother.  With Patricia and her family’s help, the cookbook became a realization.

The Salt Shakedown is dedicated to this special lady.  The Salt Shakdown is available for purchase at Euclid Hospital Lobby Mart and also the CHF/CKD Centers at Euclid, Hillcrest, South Pointe and Huron Hospitals.

They are available to you at our cost of only $5.00 per copy.
